Spring Blues - Don't be so boring!

You know that this time of year is the real hurdle to completing the year as a new invigorated and hopefully fitter person.

I am always asked about how to keep training up and what should the goal be. The problem with many people's aspirations at the start of a new year is that they do not really picture themselves seeing exercising as a way of life. If they do then normally along with them picturing themselves doing it they always link it with pain, hardwork and being an unpleasant experience.
So to combat this first you need to link exercising with enjoyment....

Some of these will help;

  • exercising with a friend or partner (but make sure you choose the right person)
  • train in a group, join a sport or activity where you socialize along with the exercise
  • make the training easy to do (you have to be able to do it as part of a life i.e. it needs to fit around family and other essential parts of your life)
  • It does no always have to be sweaty and heavy breathing exercise!
  • Mix your training up, there are lots of ways to exercise and make training always stimulating.

Some examples of the any different ways of training and props to help.

1)      Exercise video’s- they are great if you use them properly by following them and really be present when exercising to them. No other distractions (no mobile)

2)      Park training – You can use the park to form a circuit (Some Parks have exercise equipment, all for Free!)

3)      Run or Power walk – i.e. Brighton and Hove is one of the most versatile places in the country for outdoor running and walking; seafront, stammer park, gradient (hill running), cross country across devils dyke, flat interval running on the flat surface. It is endless and great for mixing it up.

4)      Home Training – You may need some help here but training at home is easy, quick and as effective as most places to train. What do you need – hanging or standing punch bag, dumbbell set, mat or rug and skipping rope will be enough.

5)      Classes – Too many to mention but consider these; dance, martial arts, body pump, kettlebells, yoga, pilates, body conditioning and sports clubs.

6)      Trainer – This is about results and really will get you where you want to be and will change your training effort forever! The best trainers are worth every penny.

Within these options you have a magnitude of combinations for variation and fun. My advice would pick a different three every three weeks and you will have no end of spice in your training. So you could start with a park circuit, seafront walk or run and class.
